Volunteer Program

An opportunity to contribute, learn, and share daily life

with the Sápara community in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Living & Learning in Cuyacocha

This volunteer program offers the opportunity to spend meaningful time in Cuyacocha, learning directly from the Sápara community while contributing something of your own.

Rather than traditional volunteering, the experience is based on exchange — sharing skills, knowledge, creativity, and daily life in a collaborative and respectful way.

Volunteers are invited to share a craft, a practice, or a skill that may benefit the community. Those without a specific specialty are still welcome to support wherever help is needed throughout daily life in the territory.

More than assistance, the program is about exchange, presence, and mutual learning.

Areas Where Volunteers Can Contribute

Education remains one of the community’s greatest needs.

The program especially welcomes volunteers who can share knowledge in ways that are respectful, collaborative, and culturally sensitive.

Reading & Writing

Supporting literacy development for both children and adults through simple, engaging learning activities.

Languages & Communication

Teaching Spanish, English, or other languages through conversation, games, storytelling, or creative exchange.

Arts & Creative Expression

Sharing music, drawing, photography, crafts, movement, or other forms of creative practice.

Mathematics & Basic Sciences

Helping strengthen foundational learning through accessible educational activities and practical teaching methods.

Environmental Education

Contributing knowledge related to ecology, sustainability, conservation, and the relationship between people and the forest.

Practical Community Skills

Skills such as hygiene, nutrition, first aid, craftsmanship, or digital literacy can also provide meaningful support to the community.

Before You Apply

Eligibility

Volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Minimum stay is one week. Dates remain flexible depending on community availability, weather conditions, and seasonal rhythms within the territory.

Volunteers are expected to participate actively in daily life and follow through with the exchange proposal they submit.

Activities may include:

All applicants must submit a short exchange proposal through a Google Form explaining what they would like to share or contribute during their stay.

Each proposal is reviewed carefully before participation is confirmed.

Volunteers are responsible for all travel expenses, including flights and transportation into the Amazon region.

A community contribution is also required. This includes:

Complex B vitamins are recommended to help reduce mosquito bites.

Yellow fever vaccination is also recommended, though not mandatory.

Volunteers should bring:

Daily Life Follows the Rhythm of the Forest

Life in Cuyacocha is simple, practical, and deeply connected to the surrounding environment.

Days may begin with preparing food from the chacra, walking forest trails with community members, fishing in the river, gathering medicinal plants, or helping with everyday tasks around the village.

Accommodation is provided in a modest riverside cabin built for visitors, located close to the families who live in the community.

Rather than observing from a distance, volunteers become part of daily life — sharing meals, conversations, work, and time together within the territory.

A Different Kind of Volunteer Experience

This experience tends to resonate with people who are comfortable with simplicity, open to learning from others, and interested in meaningful cultural exchange rather than conventional tourism.

This is not a highly structured volunteer placement or a fast-paced service program.

It is an invitation to participate in daily life within the Sápara territory and contribute in ways that feel human, thoughtful, and reciprocal.

Join the Volunteer Program

Applications are reviewed individually in coordination with the Sápara community.

If you feel aligned with the spirit of this experience and believe you have something meaningful to share, we invite you to apply.
